"On to Taft's Inauguration, 1909"
From "Glen Cove - Images of America" (by Joan Harrison, 2008); Franklin Albert Coles (1861-1943) was the younger brother of Thomas H Coles (1851-1896), my great grandfather. Grandmother Mary Gertrude grew up in the Coles family home at 7 The Place, which Franklin's son Robert Reed Coles later inherited. Franklin was involved in drawing up the charter which would result in Nassau County seceding from Queens on New Years Day in 1899. He served as Nassau County district attorney, and represented the new coiunty as a Republican state assemblyman. He declined to run for reelection for that seat so that up-and-coming Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (who later was postumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership on Utah Beach) could compete for it (successfully).
